Countries joining that first group had to bring their domestic rules into effect from the beginning of 2026 so that reporting crypto-asset service providers could collect the information during this year.

Consider a family trust that owns a conventional securities portfolio and several crypto positions. The trustees bought some Bitcoin through a regulated exchange. A beneficiary transferred Ether into the trust several years later. The family also keeps assets in a self-hosted wallet, while an external custodian holds another part of the portfolio.

The trust accounts may show the current value of those assets. They do not necessarily answer the questions that a reporting review will raise.

The trustee needs to know who opened each exchange account, when the trust became the legal owner of each asset, which wallet belongs to whom and who can authorise transfers. The records should show whether the settlor transferred a crypto asset into the trust or whether the trustee bought it using trust money. Tax residence information held by the exchange should agree with the information held elsewhere in the structure.

Crypto service providers in jurisdictions implementing CARF will collect information on relevant users and transactions and report it to their tax authorities. Authorities will then exchange information with other participating jurisdictions. The amended Common Reporting Standard will operate alongside the new crypto framework.

A family with bank accounts, investment companies, trusts and crypto holdings can therefore appear in several reporting systems at once.

That makes old administrative inconsistencies easier to find. A bank may hold a current tax residence declaration while an exchange still holds one submitted before the client moved country. A trustee may record Bitcoin as trust property while an exchange account remains in the settlor’s personal name. A beneficiary may control a wallet that the family office has treated for years as belonging to a company.

None of those records fixes the ownership question simply by existing and a blockchain will not fix it either. The ledger shows that assets moved between addresses. It does not identify the legal owner of every address or explain why the transfer occurred.

Traditional assets usually arrive with more paperwork. A EUR 2 million securities position produces statements, contract notes and records from an identifiable custodian. Someone reconstructing an old Bitcoin holding may instead find a wallet address, several exchange exports and a spreadsheet created by an employee who no longer works for the family.

Start with the assets rather than with CARF terminology. List each exchange, custodian and wallet. Match each one to a legal owner. Record who controls it. Trace transfers into and out of the structure. Compare acquisition dates and costs with accounting records. Check the tax residence details that each reporting institution holds.

A transfer between two wallets controlled by the same trust also needs a record. Without one, someone reviewing the history later may interpret the movement as a disposal, distribution or transfer to another owner.

A trust can legally own Bitcoin while a former employee still possesses recovery information. A professional trustee can approve transactions through a custodian while a beneficiary retains access to an old wallet. A multi-signature arrangement can give several people technical authority even though the trust documents assign legal authority differently.

The trustee should know exactly who can move the assets today. CARF does not turn every self-hosted wallet into a reporting institution. A transaction involving such a wallet can still become visible when a reporting service provider handles one end of the transfer. A client who withdraws Bitcoin from a regulated exchange to a private wallet has therefore not automatically moved the transaction outside the information trail.

Families that accumulated crypto over several market cycles face more work because their records often span several platforms. Exchanges have closed, merged or changed jurisdictions. People transferred assets to hardware wallets and later moved them back to custodians. Some transactions happened before the family office treated crypto as a formal asset class.

The reconstruction becomes harder after another exchange disappears or another employee leaves. Trustees already reconcile bank and brokerage records because the structure cannot function without knowing what it owns. Crypto requires the same discipline, with an additional record of wallet control.

The first CARF information exchanges arrive next year but the transactions that feed them are happening now.

The impending requirement for crypto reporting in 2027 is pushing service providers to begin record collection in 2026.
